Woman Stabbed in Birmingham Bus Stop Attack Succumbs to Injuries
A woman stabbed repeatedly in the neck in an unprovoked attack near a bus shelter in Birmingham has died, authorities verified.
The victim, aged 34 years, was targeted in Smallbrook Queensway, right beside Bullring shopping complex, shortly before 9 PM GMT on Friday, West Midlands Police said.
Djeison Rafael, twenty-one, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court Monday morning, facing charges for the violent incident.
He was previously accused of attempted murder however after the woman's death charges were upgraded to include murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
The force said police personnel will remain in the downtown area through Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives.
Investigators are requesting any eyewitnesses who may have seen Mr Rafael, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, and is believed to have been wearing an all-grey tracksuit, dark headwear, trainers and rucksack.
Attack Site Details
The knife attack occurred outside the Bullring shopping centre, opposite primary access point to Birmingham New Street station.
Police said they classified it as a random violent act with investigators stating they were working to understand the motive behind.
Eyewitness Reports
Shalini Doal, employed in the vicinity, described the emergency response after completing her shift around 10 PM Friday night.
She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", and said co-workers reported hearing a commotion at about 21:00.
"Many co-workers take public transport, take the tram... our safety is at risk fundamentally, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, mentioned visiting to Birmingham fairly regularly visiting his partner resident there, and was concerned regarding the incident.
"It causes concern about my partner," he stated.
"She lacks transportation employed at all of the big music venues... considering something completely unprovoked occurred, you know, it's horrible."
