The White House disclosed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the moves in court.
