Around 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then found numerous other marked vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials state initial examinations show the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for information.
A high-ranking representative said the incident left him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on online, recalling the death of nine people by a shooter focusing on residents of migrant background in February 2020.
