Thomas Tuchel Expresses Disappointment Over Wembley Crowd Support Despite Comfortable Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel expressed his disappointment that the Three Lions team did not enjoy greater backing from the home crowd during their commanding friendly win against Wales on Thursday evening.
The manager was pleased to see his squad showcase their good form, with goals from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Saka inside the first 20 minutes deciding the game. But, he was displeased with the energy at the iconic venue.
“We had limited training days to prepare against a well-trained team and we performed excellently,” Tuchel stated. “It could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We missed the additional goals. There was little noise. There was no any energy from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you provide in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them get away. If you hear just Wales fans for 30 minutes, it’s disappointing because the squad deserved greater backing today.”
“I support my words. We cannot do more than leading 3-0 in a derby. I hoped for a greater backing in moments where it becomes tough.”
“After halftime, to get behind us, there was a bit too much backing for the opposition. It could have helped us to recharge, but that’s the way it went and so be it.”
Squad Decisions Justified by Performance
Away from risking a dispute among fans, Tuchel also created controversy by leaving out Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. Yet the move was backed up by Morgan Rogers impressing again in the No 10 position and scoring his maiden goal for his country.
“He plays his game,” the head coach said. “He is a No 10 and he is competing for his spot.”
Wales Manager Seeks Improvement from Loss
The Wales manager expressed hope that his team, who host Belgium in a key qualifying match on next week, take lessons from their disappointing first-half display.
“This is why I scheduled this friendly,” the manager commented. “I need to see where we are. What are our ambitions? Who do we want to be? Today fills me with drive.”
Injury Concern for Watkins
Ollie Watkins was substituted at the break after clattering into a goalpost and may miss out when England face their next opponents in Riga in a qualifier on Tuesday.
