‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?

Light therapy is certainly having a wave of attention. Consumers can purchase light-emitting tools designed to address dermatological concerns and fine lines as well as muscle pain and periodontal issues, the latest being an oral care tool outfitted with small red light diodes, promoted by the creators as “a breakthrough in personal mouth health.” Internationally, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, the infrared radiation heats your body itself. As claimed by enthusiasts, it’s like bathing in one of those LED-lit beauty masks, boosting skin collagen, relaxing muscles, alleviating inflammatory responses and long-term ailments as well as supporting brain health.

Understanding the Evidence

“It appears somewhat mystical,” says a neuroscience expert, a scientist who has studied phototherapy extensively. Naturally, we know light influences biological functions. Sunlight enables vitamin D production, essential for skeletal strength, immune function, and muscular health. Natural light synchronizes our biological clocks, additionally, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and winding down bodily functions for sleep as it fades into night. Daylight-simulating devices frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to combat seasonal emotional slumps. Clearly, light energy is essential for optimal functioning.

Types of Light Therapy

Whereas seasonal affective disorder devices typically employ blue-range light, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. During advanced medical investigations, like examinations of infrared influence on cerebral tissue, identifying the optimal wavelength is crucial. Safety Considerations and Medical Oversight

UVB radiation effects, such as burning or tanning, are recognized but medical equipment uses controlled narrow-band delivery – signifying focused frequency bands – that reduces potential hazards. “Treatment is monitored by medical staff, meaning intensity is regulated,” notes the specialist. Most importantly, the light sources are adjusted by technical experts, “to confirm suitable light frequency output – as opposed to commercial tanning facilities, where regulations may be lax, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.”

Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty

Colored light diodes, he notes, “aren’t typically employed clinically, though they might benefit some issues.” Red light devices, some suggest, help boost blood circulation, oxygen absorption and cell renewal in the skin, and stimulate collagen production – a primary objective in youth preservation. “The evidence is there,” says Ho. “But it’s not conclusive.” In any case, given the plethora of available tools, “we don’t know whether or not the lights emitted are reflective of the research that has been done. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, proper positioning requirements, if benefits outweigh potential risks. There are lots of questions.”

Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions

One of the earliest blue-light products targeted Cutibacterium acnes, microorganisms connected to breakouts. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – although, says Ho, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Individuals include it in their skincare practices, he says, however for consumer products, “we advise cautious experimentation and safety verification. Unless it’s a medical device, oversight remains ambiguous.”

Advanced Research and Cellular Mechanisms

At the same time, in a far-flung field of pioneering medical science, Chazot has been experimenting with brain cells, discovering multiple mechanisms for infrared’s cellular benefits. “Nearly every test with precise light frequencies demonstrated advantageous outcomes,” he states. The numerous reported benefits have generated doubt regarding phototherapy – that results appear unrealistic. However, scientific investigation has altered his perspective.

Chazot mostly works on developing drug treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, but over 20 years ago, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He designed tools for biological testing,” he recalls. “I was pretty sceptical. This particular frequency was around 1070 nanometers, that many assumed was biologically inert.”

Its beneficial characteristic, though, was that it travelled through water easily, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.

Cellular Energy and Neurological Benefits

Additional research indicated infrared affected cellular mitochondria. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, creating power for cellular operations. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, particularly in neural cells,” says Chazot, who prioritized neurological investigations. “It has been shown that in humans this light therapy increases blood flow into the brain, which is consistently beneficial.”

With specific frequency application, energy organelles generate minimal reactive oxygen compounds. In low doses this substance, says Chazot, “activates protective proteins that safeguard mitochondria, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.”

These processes show potential for neurological conditions: oxidative protection, anti-inflammatory, and pro-autophagy – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins.

Ongoing Study Progress and Specialist Evaluations
