Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, after an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
